Shift: Secrets of Positive Change for Organizations and Their Leaders book

LEADERSHIP TRAITS THAT MAKE YOUR COMPANY MONEY

Just as expensive equipment requires maintenance, so does the mind and behavior of a company's leaders. Their thinking and subsequent behavior sets the standard for everyone in the organization to follow. Employees have the courage to speak honestly with leaders who are open to feedback about themselves - productivity, creativity, quality and profit increase.

Employees are also like precision instruments. They thrive in healthy, open, communicative environments where trust is high. They make better decisions when they know what's happening beyond their own job. Its employees, when respected and well managed, that make a company profitable.

And it's a senior manager's role to create an environment where employees can operate at their personal best (W. Edwards Deming). Notice managers and executives in your company who are great with their people! They:

  1. Are open to new ideas – The leader listens attentively and rarely plays the devil's advocate. Team members feel safe to speak about concerns. Potential problems are averted.
  2. Have a tendency to Praise – A leader's job is to educate, coach and provide opportunities and an environment where quality is maximized. This leader focuses on what works. Errors fall away.
  3. Are Humble – This leader is aware that there is more than he can know about in his division at any one time. His people are key. He relies on their input, honors their work. Motivation is high.
  4. Believe in learning from Mistakes – This trait increases learning and quality. Employees work harder to be better. This practice saves the company money.
  5. Grow themselves – Continuous learning is required. The leader who grows himself is open to develop his people. Employees follow his lead and thrive under a growth oriented leader.
  6. Share Information – Information important to productivity and quality is available well in advance. Errors are avoided. Blame is absent. Quality is high.

These traits among senior managers ensure high productivity. If these traits aren't present pay attention! There may be some work to do. Talk with us about growing leadership skills beyond those taught at MBA schools.
